The ultrasound scanner we use looks a little like a computer. There is a monitor, a keyboard and a hard disk unit. We also use a hand-held sensor, which is attached to the scanner. This looks a little like a paint roller. The sensor sends out sound waves and picks up the returning echoes.
As the scanner slides over your skin, images of the inside of your body are shown on the monitor.
Our image system is linked with the image data system called PACS at the University Hospital. Data protection applies as outlined by NHS regulations. The benefit for you is seamless medical care. In case you will be referred to a consultant for further treatment your consultant will be able to access the images to enhance his / her judgement.
We are also cooperating with UKTeleradiology a consortium of radiologists assisting in clinical governance and performing ongoing clinical auditing for quality control purposes.
The type of scanner we use is the Hitachi EUB 6500-HV. This is state-of-the-art in ultrasound scanners, successfully combining high performance scanning with a wide range of clinical applications, ease of use and intelligent data management. The exceptional processing power of the Hitachi EUB 6500-HV enables precise imaging of anatomical and physiological detail.
