Renal ultrasound scanning

A renal ultrasound scan is most commonly used when you have loin pain, suffer often from urinary tract infections, have high blood pressure or blood in your urine. However, your doctor may also refer you because you are suffering from other symptoms or he/she maybe concerned about examination findings.

A kidney and bladder ultrasound is also used to help in the diagnosis of bladder problems and in males for prostate problems.

Your doctor might also want to know how well you can empty you urinary bladder. We are able to measure the remaining urine volume in your bladder after voiding.

Amongst other conditions, a renal ultrasound scan can detect:

  • Kidney stones
  • Cysts
  • Tumours
  • Congenital abnormalities of the renal tract (these are abnormalities that have been present from birth)
  • Blockage of the urinary collecting system
  • Effects of infection
  • Bladder stones
  • Bladder tumours
  • Bladder diverticula
  • Post-micturition volume
  • Enlargement of the prostate

What preparations do you have to follow prior to the examination?

  • Please drink 1½ pints of water one hour before the appointment time.

  • Do not pass water from then onwards!

  • Please alert a member of staff if you have any problems.
