Pelvic ultrasound scanning

A pelvic ultrasound scan in females is the most commonly used method to examine the uterus and ovaries. It is used in the investigation of lower abdominal and pelvic pain, menstrual disturbances including heavy periods, painful periods and bleeding between periods and bleeding after menopause.

Transabdominal

The examination commences with the transabdominal scan, which is done from the lower tummy using your full bladder as an acoustic window.

For some questions and in order to get a better resolution it is necessary to perform a transvaginal scan.

Transvaginal

Transvaginal ultrasound scans utilise higher frequency imaging, which gives better resolution of the ovaries, uterus and endometrium (the fallopian tubes are generally not seen unless distended).

As all other examinations a transvaginal scan is only performed with your verbal consent.

Amongst other conditions a pelvic ultrasound can detect:

  • Fibroids

  • Endometrial polyps

  • Thickening of the endometrium

  • Adenomyosis

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometrioma

  • Dermoid cysts

  • Uterine and Ovarian tumours

  • Pelvic abscess

What preparations do you have to follow prior to the examination?

  • Please drink 11/2 pints of water one hour before the appointment time.

  • Do not pass water from then onwards!

  • Please alert a member of staff if you have any problems
