Abdominal ultrasound scans are used to help identify abnormalities in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, aorta, abdominal lymph nodes, pancreas, spleen and kidneys.
An abdominal ultrasound is used to diagnose many conditions; the most common ones are listed below:
- Fatty liver

- Liver haemanagioma
- Liver metastasis
- Gallstones

In order to record the best possible images it is important that you will have fasted and we would like to ask you to follow the preparation instructions below.
What preparations do you have to follow prior to the examination?
For an abdominal ultrasound examination you must starve for at least six hours prior to the
allocated examination time.
That means:
- If you have a morning appointment do not have breakfast. You can drink water if you are thirsty
- if you have an afternoon appointment do not have lunch and only a light (low fat) breakfast early in the morning at least six hours prior to the appointment. If you take medication do so as usual with a sip of water.If you are diabetic you may prefer a morning appointment for your ultrasound examination. If you miss breakfast do not take your diabetic tablets or inject insulin. Please bring some food and your tablets / insulin with you for after the examination.
